It’s advisable to check your personal vaccination needs and the vaccination recommendations for your destination well in advance of your trip. The required vaccinations depend on the destination, the nature of the trip, and its duration. For a short holiday in Northern and Western Europe or North America, the vaccinations included in the Finnish national immunization program are usually sufficient, provided they are up to date. For longer trips, travel to tropical destinations, or when moving abroad, it is always recommended to check the vaccination guidelines for the destination country.

Travel and Vaccinations

When planning a trip, it is important to remember that vaccinations should be taken well in advance. It is advisable to assess your vaccination needs at least 2–3 months before departure. Some vaccines require multiple doses in order to provide sufficient protection.

It is also important to review your current vaccination status. You can check your vaccination history through occupational health services, student health services, as well as via the Kanta.fi service and old vaccination or maternity clinic records.

The foundation of a traveler’s protection is formed by the vaccines included in the national immunization program, which are mainly administered during childhood and adolescence. In adulthood, booster doses for tetanus and diphtheria should be taken every 10–20 years, depending on age. All 25-year-olds are also vaccinated against pertussis (Tdap vaccine).

Travel Vaccinations for Children and Young People

In addition to travel vaccines, it is important to ensure that children and young people are up to date with the vaccinations included in the national immunization program, and to complete any missing vaccinations before travel if necessary. In some cases, routine vaccinations may need to be given earlier than scheduled due to travel.
