Rabies vaccine schedule
For travellers, a two-dose pre-exposure vaccination series (given at days 0 and 7) is generally sufficient, and routine booster doses are usually not required. If a potential exposure occurs, for example, after a dog bite, additional vaccine doses are always needed and they are given according to medical advice and the person's previous vaccination history. For people who work with animals, the need for booster doses is assessed individually, based on factors such as the level of exposure risk and, where appropriate, antibody levels.
- Further information on booster vaccination for specific groups is available from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).
Side effects of rabies vaccine
Rabies vaccine is generally well tolerated. The most common reactions are local reactions at the injection site, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, muscle pain and dizziness.
