Typhoid vaccine

Typhoid fever is a serious systemic infection caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi. It can be contracted through contaminated food or drinking water, as well as through direct person-to-person contact. Infected people spread the bacteria through their stool. A person who has no symptoms can also unknowingly spread the typhoid bacteria. Both injectable and oral typhoid vaccines are available. Typhoid vaccination should be considered when travelling to Africa, South America, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and the Pacific region, regardless of the length of the trip. Travellers who visit friends and relatives, as well as those who travel frequently or stay for extended periods in areas with poor sanitation and food hygiene, are at increased risk.

Typhoid vaccination schedule

The injectable typhoid vaccine is suitable for children over 2 years of age and adults. The vaccine is inactivated, meaning that it does not contain live pathogens. The vaccine should preferably be given at least two weeks before the planned trip to allow sufficient time for protection to develop. Protection against typhoid fever lasts for approximately three years, after which a booster may be recommended if necessary.

The oral typhoid vaccine is a live, attenuated vaccine consisting of three capsules, which are swallowed whole every other day. It can also be given to children who are able to safely swallow a relatively large vaccine capsule (usually from around 5 years of age). The oral typhoid vaccine must not be taken during antibiotic treatment, and immunodeficiency is a contraindication to vaccination. Protection against typhoid fever begins approximately 7–10 days after completing the three-capsule course.

Good to know about the oral typhoid vaccine

You should avoid eating and drinking for one hour before and one hour after taking the vaccine. You will receive the first typhoid vaccine capsule at the vaccination clinic and take the other two capsules home with you. The vaccine should be stored in the refrigerator and must not be frozen.

Duration of protection

Both the injectable and oral typhoid vaccines provide protection against typhoid fever for approximately three years. After this, a booster may be recommended if necessary.

Side effects of the typhoid vaccine

Both typhoid vaccines are generally well tolerated. The most common reactions to the injectable typhoid vaccine are pain at the injection site, headache, fever and feeling unwell. The most common reactions to the oral vaccine are gastrointestinal symptoms, fever and headache.
